World Book for Kids

WBFK has links for energy, nuclear energy, solar energy, fuel, fossil fuel.  Students can hear text read aloud or double-click a word to define it.  The energy page has pictures of a solar energy plant, wind turbines, and several hands-on activities listed in the sidebar on the left.  I could not find anything about hydroelectric energy in WBFK.

Energy Kids

The US Energy Administration Energy Kids site contains a great deal of information about energy including sections on renewable and nonrenewable forms of energy, electricity, and several games and activities. The Things to Do page includes a downloadable .pdf that is a scavenger hunt of facts on the website.

Energy StarKids

This US website has a variety of activities for kids on saving energy.  There is also a link to a text only version of the website and portions of the site are printable.  Highlights include an activity to explore energy savings in a typical bedroom, a word bank/glossary of energy-related words, and Horton Hears a Who and Lorax activity books.

Excellent online book on subject of energy includes information, videos and graphics on renewable energy sources. Text can be read to students; click on the page to enlarge. Check out the review by Kelley Tenkley.

Games and Interactives

Children's University of Manchester

The Children's University of Manchester has a page on energy and resources which includes several sidebars and activities. The section on renewable and non-renewable energy resources includes a definition of both types and a self-checking quiz.

Virtual Power Plant Tour

This narrated tour of the powerplant contains several animations and pictures.  It has sections on coal, water, and electricity.  You can view the entire tour or jump to any of the sections.

Photos, Slideshows and Videos

Scholastic StudyJams Energy, Light, and Sound

The StudyJams site contains 3 slideshows on Natural Resources, Renewable Fuels, and Fossil Fuels. The vocabulary covered in each presentation is listed. The slideshow presentations require grade level reading of the captions.

Sources of Energy (6:10)

Excellent Teacher's Domain Video with option to turn on captioning discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the most common energy sources.  Would work well for student note-taking on a graphic organizer set up by teacher.

Energy Conservation for Kids Videos and Song

Horizon Utilities in Hamilton ON has produced a series of short videos on various aspects of conservation in the home.  These include Water Usage (2:20), Phantom Power (3:18), Heating and Cooling (2:47), Light Bulbs (2.35) and Windows (1:52) and a Power Saving Song (2:05)  Other videos are available at their YouTube channel.  There is an option to turn on beta captions translated with Google translator but they are not very accurate.

Neok12 Videos

The Neok12 page on energy features 27 short videos. These include videos on specific renewable and non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels, solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, hydroelectric, and biomass. I would particularly recommend Alternative Energy (2:50), Alternative Energy Sources (3:40), Hydroelectric Power (2:10) which describes power generation in Ontario, Hydroelectric Documentary (3:01).
