Confederation for Kids

This Library and Archives Canada website was designed for kids 9-13.   It has a section on the provinces and why/when each joined Canada which includes maps.  There is also a section on important people who helped form Canada.  There is also a gallery of historical photos and a helpful glossay.  The teacher section includes a unit in which students renegotiate Confedederation. 

 

About Parliament

This section of the Parliament of Canada website contains links to many teacher and student resources including entire units, glossaries, and videos.  The resources are presented for several different levels, there is a special glossary for ESL students, and the videos have an ASL version.  This website is being updated constantly so if you get broken links visit a little later.

SET-BC Accessible Books

The following books with Aboriginal Cultures content relevant to the topic of governance are available on CD in accessible PowerPoint format from SET-BC's Accessible Books collection for use with students who have special needs. I have all of these book in my office and you are welcome to look at them and decide which would be appropriate for your student.

Secret of the Dance deals with efforts to preserve traditions during a time they were outlawed.  Shi-shi-etko and Shin-chi's Canoe are stories of children who went to residential school.

Online book and downloadable .pdf.  The reading level and concepts may be a little difficult for grade 5 but may be useful as a resource.

How Canadians Govern Themselves:  7 Interactives and Games

This brand new section of the Parliament website contains several interactives and games. In the Time Travel section students can learn about how Canada was formed by clicking on an interactive Timeline. In the Inside View section, students can complete a Parliamentary Puzzle, follow a bill through its stages, learn about Parliament in action, discover key differences between government in the US and Canada, and see what it takes to become a Prime Minister in a role-playing game. In the Touchpoints section students play a game in which they determine which level of government is responsible for which service.

Prime Ministers, House of Commons, and Conferation Timeline Games

The Citizenship and Immigration Canada website features a Youth (and Teacher) Corner with 10 interactive games. These include a Prime Ministers word search, a House of Commons Hidden Object Search, and a Confederation Timeline in which students drop flags onto a timeline in the order in which the provinces joined Canada.

Notebook Lesson:  Comparing Canada and US

A search for Canada Government in the Activity Exchange resulted in just one lesson, a professionally designed SMART Notebook lesson.  It explains a few facts about Canada, though not specifically about government, and then students use a Venn Diagram to compare Canada and US.  The lesson can be previewed online before downloading.
