This exploratorium website contains information, original field notes, webcasts, interactive map, photos, and videos from a scientific expedition to Antarctica in 2001. Interesting information is presented about why scientists travel to Antarctica, living conditions at the research base, and technology used in research. Highlights include the exploration of a polar desert, a hike up an active volcano, and description of a polar storm. Requires grade level reading.

Ice Stories from Polar Scientists
Exploratorium website equipped polar scientists with cameras and blogging tools and asked them to create first-hand accounts of their experiences in polar regions . The website is organized by region and by "big ideas" such as climate, transportation, wildlife, etc. Some of the blog entries require grade level reading but there is also a large collection of webcasts, photos and videos on this website.

Canadian Icebreaker Amundsen
The page for the Canadian icebreaker Amundsen contains links to a great photo gallery ,a detailed list of the scientific equipment aboard the ship, list of expeditions, and a virtual tour of the ship.
This BBC website contains several blog entries by reporters aboard the Amundsen as it navigates the Northwest Passage. Pictures, video, and webcasts are embedded on the page. Scroll to the bottom for a map of the route.

Explore Ice Worlds
This lunar and Planetary educational website has a huge list of great websites on the polar regions that are suitable for students. Also check under "activities" in the menu toolbar for a large number of hands-on polar theme activities. I haven't included this website on the sqworl page but if you have students keen to do additional research you may find this useful.
