Canadian Geographic Protect Your Watershed

In the Protect Your Watershed section of the Canadian Geographic website you can explore the major watersheds of Canada or input your city and province to find your local watershed.  Clicking a watershed on an interactive map takes you to photos and information about that watershed.  Additional pages explore watershed themes such as groundwater, quality, climate change, and urbanization.  The main page is fine for grade 5 but other pages require very good reading skills.

Games and Interactives

Harcourt Science Up Close Interactives:  Water Cycle, Ground Pollution, Clouds

In this excellent interactive on the Water Cycle, students click on various parts of a diagram to learn more.  The Harcourt site also includes lessons and interactives on What Happens During the Water Cycle, Evaporation and Condensation, Ground Pollution and Types of Clouds.  Click on each grade level to browse the videos.  These activities contain many options for differentiation including narration, captioning, and keyboard hot-keys.  The activities take time to load but are worth the wait.

The Federation for Water and Energy Education website features a virual tour of a hydroelectric dam.  Clicking on various parts of the diagram opens pages with photographs and simple explanations.  You can also download .pdfs and watch a video.

4-H Videos Upstream (8:43) and Downstream (9:34)

The 4-H club has produced two excellent videos Upstream featuring a middle school's girl quest to find out where her water comes from and Downstream to find where it goes after it's used. The girl's interview with the Montana farmer on a local "crick" is particularly interesting as he helps himself to her lunch and tells her how much water it has taken to produce each item in the bag. Your water usage turns out to be much more than just what you consume or use in your own home!
