Page history last edited by Mallory Burton 11 years, 11 months ago

Grade 5 Social Studies IRP:

  • physical regions of Canada
  • maps and timelines

Why do countries, provinces, tribes, teams, schools have symbols like flags/birds/flowers?

Student Links

Sqworl Page for Students

Here's a link to a Sqworl page on Canadian Provinces and Capitals that I made for easy student access to the sites below.   It's very very easy to create these pages and a great way to present a selection of websites for safe research or for home use.  After registering for a free account, all you do is create a new group, enter each url you want to appear on the page, give it a short title or description and Sqworl creates the thumbnails which you can drag to arrange.

Research

World Book Entries and Activities

World Book for Kids has an entry on Canada plus an individual entry for each province.  These entries can be read aloud using the site's text-to-speech.

Printables

Individual Provinces

The Kid Zone website has pages about each of the provinces and territories with very simple information about each, downloadable colouring and activity pages for each province's map, flower, flag, and a variety of online puzzles of provincial flowers or animals.  A few of the provinces have photo tours.

Online Games

20 Games at Sheppard Software

Sheppard Software has a selection of 20 different games about Canadian Geography at their site.  The games are organized into 3 main topic areas:  Provinces, Capitals, and Geography (regions, rivers, lakes, oceans).  Because this site has so many ads, I've chosen just a few to put on the sqworl page, but we can easily change or add to the selection.

Map Puzzle Game

The Owl Canada Map Puzzle has 3 different activities.  Drag the province piece to the correct map location with or without province boundary outlines, and drag the capitol marker to the correct location.   Select the activity on the front page and then click play.  [For times when an Internet connection is unavailable, the Canada Map Puzzle can be downloaded HERE for use on a PC.]

Songs/Videos

Provinces/Territories Video

Canada's Provinces and Territories (2 min) names the provinces and territories and explains the difference.  The video then provides information such as the oldest/newest/largest/smallest provinces.

Trip Across the Provinces Video

A Trip across Canada (3 min) shows the map, flag, and scenery from each province with the national anthem in English and French playing in the background.

Canada in My Pocket

Great song about the symbols on Canadian coins.  Extension activity:  write verses for the Loonie and Toonie.

Regions of Canada Video 14:26

This video, set to music contains pictures with captions showing scenes from several regions of Canada. Teacher Caren R. says she sometimes uses this film at the beginning of a unit to get kids thinking about the regions of Canada and suggests muting the music.
