World Book for Kids

WBFK has a links for the digestive system, stomach, human body, food, and nutrition.  This page can be emailed, printed, or downloaded as a .pdf file and put into Kurzweil for reading.

SBFS has an excellent link for the digestive system which contains many pictures and videos.  This page can be emailed, printed, or downloaded as a .pdf file and put into Kurzweil for reading.

 

Kids Health Digestive System

The Kids Health website has an online article on the digestive system with optional audio support and different text sizes.  The article can also be printed.

 

Games and Interactives

 

Kids Health Interactive Diagram

Students can point the mouse to different parts of this digestive system interactive to discover information about that part of the system. 

Sheppard Software Tutorial, Games, and Quiz

In the interactive tutorial, students roll the mouse over various body parts to learn more about their function.  The items covered are:  mouth, teeth, salivary glands, esophagus, gall bladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, large intestine.  After learning about each item, students can play 2 digestion games and take a quiz.  In Game 1, students assemble the digestive system on a diagram which shows the outlines of the organs.  In Game 2 the outlines of the organs have been removed.  In the quiz, students click on the body part described in each section.  If an answer is incorrect, the correct answer is provided.

 

 

Kids Health Word Search and Quiz 

The Kids Health site also contains an online Digestive System Word Search and a 10 question Digestive System Quiz.  Students can print the results of the quiz and/or a list of all 10 questions with the correct answer.

 

Beaks and Teeth

This excellent Harcourt Interactive is designed to get students thinking about the role that beaks and teeth play in the beginning of digestion.  It has a number of built-in supports such as voice, captioning, and keyboard shortcuts.   The interactive displays 5 different animals with a variety of beaks and teeth.  Students click on the animal to hear a description of how its beak or teeth are designed and then match a food to the animal. 

 

Photos, Slideshows and Videos

Study Jams Slideshow and Quiz

The Study Jams site hosts an excellent slideshow about the digestive system followed by an interactive quiz.  The slideshow requires reading at grade level and slides can be printed.  The quiz consists of 7 questions and answers are provided.

Kids Health Digestive System Video

This engaging video covers basic anatomy and processes of digestion.  CAUTION:  contains the word poop.

 

NeoK12 Videos

The NeoK12 site hosts a collection of 12 short educational videos on the digestive system and nutrition.  In How Do You Digest Your Food (6:10) science guy Martin Brain uses ordinary household items to very effectively explain how the digestive system works.  For example, he puts a sandwich and glass of milk into a ziplock bag and manipulates the bag to show how the stomach breaks food down.  CAUTION:  the video contains the words poop and fart.  The Digestive System Animation and the The Digestive System X-Ray View are short and simple enough visually but contains some additional vocabulary that are not generally taught in grade 5.

Digestive System

In this downloadable grid, students can see and hear the names of the parts of the digestive system.  Then they label the parts of the digestive system in an error-free environment.  Created by Kathy Ryan to address grade 5 PLOs. 

 

Nutrients and Oxygen

In this downloadable grid, students learn how the body takes in and uses nutrients and oxygen.  The grid contains a learning and a writing activity.
