Electricity

Page history last edited by Mallory Burton 10 years, 1 month ago

BC Grade 6 Science IRP:

  • evaluate various methods for producing small electrical charges
  • test a variety of electrical pathways using direct current circuits
  • demonstrate that electricity can be transformed into light, heat, sound, motion, and magnetic effects
  • differentiate between renewable and non-renewable methods of producing electrical energy

Sqworl Page of Student Links

Here are 2 collections of student-friendly electricity links and energy links chosen from the sites below and organized in a simple visual index.  These sqworl pages are very easy to make so if you don't like the selection you can easily create your own.  Here's a sqworl on the electricity theme created by another teacher from which I got several of the best sites listed below!

Research

World Book for Kids

WBFK has links for electricity, energy, battery, electric generator, and electronics.  There are also links for energy and types of energy such as solar energy and nuclear energy. These pages are written in simpler language and can be downloaded as .pdf files for use with an etext reader, printed, or emailed.  The electricity page contains a visual with safety tips.

World Book for Students

WBFS has excellent and detailed information on electricity which can be accessed from the main electricity page.  Topics include static electricity, current, electromagnetism, safety, insulators, conductors, etc.  There is also a main link for energy with sidebar links to types of energy such as chemical, thermal, solar, nuclear. These pages can be downloaded as .pdf files for use with an etext reader, printed, or emailed.

Energy Kids

The US Energy Administration Energy Kids site contains a great deal of information about energy including sections on renewable and nonrenewable forms of energy, electricity, and several games and activities.  The Things to Do page includes a downloadable .pdf that is a scavenger hunt of facts on the website.

BBC Bitesize Electricity

This website is particularly good for information on current, voltage, and circuits.  Includes explanations of the symbols used in diagrams of circuits and clarifies the difference between series and parallel circuits.  Each topic includes a tutorial, interactive activity, and test.

Books and Etext

Night Without Light Online Book

Excellent online book with animations tells about a family's experience with a power outage caused by a tree branch falling on electric lines.  Also explains where electricity comes from and how it is delivered to homes.  Sponsored by the Pacific Gas and Electric company.

Energy Online Book

Excellent online book on subject of energy includes information, videos and graphics on renewable energy sources.  Text can be read to students; click on the page to enlarge.   This book is in the public domain.  Check out the review by Kelley Tenkley.

Games and Interactives

Electric Circuits

Outstanding interactive website from the UK created for students 7-11 years of age to show how common household objects and appliances work.  Topics include electricity in the home, simple circuits and their components, changing circuits by adding bulbs, batteries and different lengths and thicknesses of wire, circuit diagrams etc. Options for 1 or 2 learners so would make a great partner activity.  Would also be great projected on a SMARTBoard.  Requires reading and a few British expressions such as "torch" and "mains" need explanation.  Students may also have difficulty identifying the half-size British fridge in the Electricity in the Home activity.  The word "components" may also need explanation.

Blobz Guide to Electrical Circuits

Award-winning interactive website for 1-5 learners.  Each of 5 sections has a short tutorial, an activity, and a 5 question quiz.  Topics include circuits, conductors and insulators, switches, changing circuits, and circuit diagrams.  Students can click on special vocabulary such as insulator or conductor highlighted in red for more information.  Requires reading and a few British expressions such as "torch, mains, cell, pound coin, and posh" need explanation.  The quiz section tells students the number of questions they got correct and lets them attempt the test again but does not provide corrective feedback or the correct answers so it might be better to project this activity for the whole class if you have a SMARTBoard.

This review of Blobz Circuits from Teachers Love SMARTBoards include a link to a downloadable version.

Learning Circuits

Interactive website has options for 1-3 learners or for the whole class (whiteboard).  Students can customize their avatar and colour scheme for the activity and print out a worksheet prior to beginning.  Topics include circuits, conductors and insulators, switches, changing circuits, and circuit diagrams.  Students can click on words highlighted in blue which opens the glossary or they can access the glossary directly.  There is a quiz at the end which gives a total correct but no corrective feedback  Requires reading and explanation of a few British expressions such as "mains".  The British plugs and sockets also look a bit different.  If students try to click through the pages without trying all of the simulations the program warns them that they have not spent enough time on the activity.

Harcourt Science Up Close Interactive Lessons

Harcourt has short lessons on the Electrical CircuitHow a Battery WorksWater Current and Electric CurrentAn Electric Motor, These lessons feature optional voice, captioning, and keyboard shortcuts.  These lessons would be an excellent way for your non-readers to gain information about electricity concepts.  The activities may take awhile to load but are excellent quality and work great on the SMARTBoard.

4 BBC Electricity Interactives

BBC has a series of 4 interactive activities with quizzes on an electricity theme.  In each activity students drag objects onto a blank space in the circuit to get the lightbulb to light.  The activities are Using ElectricityCircuits and Conductors, and Changing Circuits.  While you're on the page, check out the sidebar at the left for links to other interactive science activities listed by age.  In another very engaging activity students construct a circuit and test different conductors and insulators in order to select a suit to protect a diver from electric eels.

The Electricity Book

Online "book" has interactive pages which explain a simple electrical circuit.  3 pages of explanation are followed by 6 examples of circuits in which students tell whether or not a lightbulb will light and provide their reasons.  It's possible to print the answers but is not self-checking.  Would make a very nice partner activity with a stronger/weaker reader paired.

Photos and Videos

Scholastic StudyJams Energy, Light, and Sound

The StudyJams site contains 1 video and 5 slideshows with matching quizzes on an energy and electricity theme.  These include:  Electricity (video), Current Electricy and Electric Circuits, Fossil Fuels, Renewable Fuels, and Natural Resources.  The vocabulary covered in each presentation is listed.  The slideshow presentations require grade level reading of the captions.

Neok12 Electricity, Electromagnetism, and Energy Videos

The Neok12 page on electricity contains 13 videos.  The second video, produced by Hila Science Centre in Pembroke Ontario, provide excellent basic information about current, batteries, and circuits.  The Neok12 page on electromagnetism contains 9 videos.  The energy page contains 27 videos which show how many different sources of energy including solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, wind, fossil fuel.

Geothermal Energy in Iceland (6:42)

Excellent video shows geothermal energy in Iceland which provides renewable energy for the entire country.

National Geographic Solar Energy in California (2:39)

Excellent video shows extremely large solar generating plant in the Mohave Desert and how residents of Sacramento sell energy generated by solar panels on the roof back to the grid.
