Sqworl Page of Student Links

Here is a collection of student links chosen from the sites below and organized in a handy visual index.

World Book for Kids

WBFK has links for Natural Resources and for related topics:  Conservation, Environmental Pollution, Recycling, Forests, Water, Sun, Fuel, etc.  Students can click on the speaker icon to hear the article read aloud and double-click on a word to hear its definition.  The articles can also be emailed or printed.

World Book for Students

SBFS has a link for Natural Resources which includes a video explaining the types of renewable and non-renewable resources.  These articles can be emailed or printed or printed to the KESI Virtual printer to bring them quickly into Kurzweil.  Related topics include Pollution, Conservation, Recycling, and pages on individual resources.

BC Time Machine Archives:  Natural Resources

This website covers the historical development of resource use in BC including agriculture, forestry, mining, and fishing.

Just came across this excellent SD 71 teacher-developed resource for Natural Resources.

Games and Interactives

Harcourt Science Up Close Interactives

The Harcourt site  includes lessons and interactives on Ways to Save Resources and People Can Avoid Wasting. Click on each grade level to browse the videos. These activities contain many options for differentiation including narration, captioning, and keyboard hot-keys. The activities take time to load but are worth the wait.

Recycling Game in Sammy's Science House

Learn Now BC website has made Edmark's Sammy's Science House available online.  This popular children's software includes a recycling activity.  The software version on CD is switch-accessible.

Recycle City

There is lots to explore in this virtual city which explains various aspects of recycling, reducing, and reusing.

Photos, Videos, and Slideshows

Scholastic StudyJams Natural Resources Slideshows

The StudyJams site contains 3 slideshows on Natural Resources, Renewable Fuels, and Fossil Fuels found in the Energy Light and Sound section. The vocabulary covered in each presentation is listed. The slideshow presentations require grade level reading of the captions and are followed by a short quiz.

Scholastic StudyJams Ecosystem Videos

There is an entire section in StudyJams devoted to Ecosystems.  This includes videos and presentations on Ecosystems, Changes in Ecosystems, Water Cycle, Carbon Cycle and other related topics.  Each video or slideshow is followed by a short quiz; the slideshows require grade level reading of the captions.

Neok12 Photos and Videos

The Neok12 page on Natural Resources includes a section at the top where students can view pictures related to the theme and create a presentation.  There are also 11 videos on subjects related to Natural Resources.  Unfortunately the activities on the page that used to be free now require a subscription.

Clicker5 Grid Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

This grid was created by Mallory Burton to address a grade 3 plo but is a good fit with the grade 5 Earth's Resources unit. The grid contains a short story explaining the 3 terms and a writing component in which students are asked to identify examples as reducing, reusing, or recycling.

SMARTBoard

SB Lessons Activity Exchange

A search for lessons on "natural resources" at the grade 5 level returned 346 results. I checked about 6 of these including some designated for the grade 2 level and all were excellent.  Several included activities for sorting renewable and non-renewable resources, including a professionally designed SMART Notebook Lesson. You can preview the lessons on the site before downloading.
