Student Links

Sqworl Page of Student Links

Here is a collection of student links chosen from the sites below.

Research

World Book for Kids

WBFK has links for food chain,  habitat, biome, and also for specific biomes such as grassland, tundra, etc. Students can double-click on words to see their definitions and there is built-in text-to-speech. The articles can also be printed.

World Book for Students

SBFS has links for ecology (which includes a section on ecosystems)  habitat, biome, and also for specific biomes such as grassland, tundra, etc. Students can double-click on words to see their definitions and there is built-in text-to-speech. The articles can also be printed.

Herbivore, Carnivore, Omnivore, Decomposer, Scavenger...

Great site for doing research on roles in the food chain. Although this page opens to Herbivore, there are links at the bottom that lead to Carnivore, Omnivore, Decomposer, etc.

World Biomes

This outstanding Kids Do Ecology website features a definition of biomes and links to many different kinds of biomes, games, and related resources. The biomes pages require reading but are written in relatively simple language. Recommended by grade 5 teacher Caren R.

NASA Mission: Biomes

This excellent NASA website features information on 7 different biomes. Each page contains essential characteristics given in point form, pictures, maps, and a more detailed description. Information in point form is deal for students who find large amounts of text challenging.

Games and Interactives

Fun with Food Webs

Excellent Harcourt site in which students assemble food webs for a choice of 3 biomes: meadow, pond, and arctic. There are 6 items in the chain, but this game provides automatic feedback.

Graph Match Game

In this activity from the NASA biomes page, students read a temperature graph and a precipation graph and then choose one of two cities listed below that best match the data. Students would need some help getting started with this activity as it might not at first apparent what to do. Includes beginner and advanced levels.

To Plant or Not to Plant

In this activity from the NASA biomes page, students click on a plant to learn its characteristics and then choose the biome where it would likely thrive from a drop-down menu.

BBC Kids Match Alien to Environment Game

In this game, students read descriptions of aliens and choose the proper environment where they can survive. Much but not all of the text is accompanied by speech support.
